DVS-6 module installation and testing

The DVS-6 Digital Voice module is easy to install just by following the instructions from page 120 of the FT-950 manual. Removing the 18 screws from the bottom take the most time! Note the module position in the pictures. Left connector has one less pin than the connector on the right. I did mark all the cables from the back of the radio for easy placement putting it back together. Once reassembled, follow page 64 for testing. Really neat to hear what I sound like on playback.I transmitted into a dummy load for testing. I'll try both microphones to hear the difference but for now just happy it works. No time to play in the WPX contest this weekend except for several contacts of some loud DX.

  2. Kelly, I think its a good deal for less than $75.It was easy to install, simple to use and has given Me no problems. I haven't used it as much as I thought I would but only because most of My contesting has ended up being more S & P operations.

  5. Jimmy, The DVS-6 unit is needed to record voicealthough CW can be recorded on the FT-950 with no add on device. CW is handled thru the FT-950 memory although I believe only 5 memory locations of about 20? characters. The FH-2 is a remote keypad used to control functions on the FT-950 including CW memory and this DVS-6 unit.Hope this helps. Thanks for reading My blog!

  6. Tim, can the DVS-6 record and playback a station over the air so your contact can hear what their audio sounds like? Thanks. Howard W6HDG

  7. Howard, Good question. No where in the Ft-950 manual explaining the set-up and use of the DVS-6 module does it indicate on-air record capability. It might be possible to use the Microphone to record from on air audio from the speaker. You would have to be quite familiar with the button sequence utilized to record to the DVS-6 but i think it would only take some practice. I do wonder about unwanted feedback- I don't think this module was ever envisioned to be an "on-air" recordable device. It does work well to record "canned" messages - which is what it was designed for.

  8. Hi Tim,

Do you have to have FH-2 to use DVS-1?

    Thanks

  9. Hi Bat,
I do not have the FH-2 and My voice keyer works fine without it. The FH-2 can be used to control the voice keyer but is not necessary. I will be using the DVS-1 during the ARRL 10m contest and from previous experience it works great. Thanks for the question--hope to hear you on the bands!

  10. Hi Tim, how is the DVS-6 working? When you are in the Contest, do you press the button stored CQ every time or it calls CQ automatically after short RX break?

Is there any notification for your blog? Like when you post in your blog, can I get notification of it?

    Tnx, Bat, JT1CS

  12. i see conflicting reports where the FH-2 is a MUST for DVS-6 use with voice messages on a FTDX-1200, is this true? If it is possible to use the DVS-6 without the FH-2, anyone have any idea where the instructions are to do so?
